PRE-SHIFT
JOURNAL
PROMPTS
If you are having a hard time coming up with prompts, use some of these from Breaking Bread on a sheet of paper or in a notebook. We also have a guided journal which includes pre-shift, mid-shift, and post-shift reflection prompts available.
These pages aren't about writing paragraphs or sounding poetic. They are about clearing space - mentally and emotionally - before you step into service again. A five-minute journal can be the difference between reacting and responding, between carrying the job home and leaving it at the door when the shift ends.
What kind of mindset do
I want to bring
into today's shift?
How's my body feeling - rested, tense, distracted, or ready?
Who or what can I lan on if things get heavy today?
What kind of firefighter, leader or teammate do I want to be today?
How can I help boost crew morale or support someone else today?
What do I need to let go of from home, so I can stay focused here?
What's one intention I have for today (patience, focus, calm, leadership)?
What does being present look like for me today?
What still weighs on me from last shift?
What's one thing I can control today, even when everything else feels out of control?
